Wow. And we’re back for another Taylor Swift album review. She just keeps us on our toes, doesn’t she?

willow

Technically I guess this is my second time hearing this song since I saw the video premier last night. So here’s my initial reaction to the video:

Water themes always make me think of Brand New.

Oh look, there’s a wine reference!

She sings so high in this whole song, it’s different.

I don’t really have much more to say about this one. I love the picking of the mandolin and the general melody.

champagne problems

alcohol reference #2

This reminds me of New Years Day.

Oh oof this is about a couple breaking up when the guy was about to propose? OUCH.

I can’t even imagine how this would feel. Poor guy.

I have to say, I don’t really understand the “champagne problems” line. It doesn’t seem to make sense.

SHE SAID FUCKED.

lol at the little piano fun at the end.

gold rush

Aww yes this beat!

“with my Eagles t-shirt hanging from the door”

SHE SAID SHIT.

The transition to the “what must it be like” hits weird.

SHE SAID FOLKLORE.

’tis the damn season

Well I love the title, so.

Ugh, small town feels. I hate it.

“Sleeping half the day just for old time’s sake”

I liked the part when she dubbed over herself with a high and low pitch.

tolerate it

SHE SAID SHIT AGAIN.

Is she just cussing just to cuss at this point? lol

Is this just about like a maid who’s obsessed with her older employer? I’m so confused.

no body, no crime (ft. haim)

Okay well I love the title.

Hey she name-dropped Este.

This is very country. But it’s also about crime so how am I supposed to not like it? lol

TUESDAY NIGHT AT OLIVE GARDEN

O shit Este dead.

“Good thing my daddy made me get a boating license when I was 15.”

This has very “Goodbye Earl” vibes.

Okay well this is by far my fave so far.

happiness

Did she just say shit again?

This is like that episode of South Park where they shit like 117 times.

“Tell me when did your winning smile start to look like a smirk” wow what a line.

SHE SAID GODDAMN.

dorothea

TUPELO LOL

Is this name a reference to someone else’s kid?

This is like the sequel to Mean. Is Dorothea the girl that is “living in a big ol’ city?”

coney island (ft. the national)

Man, I wanna go to Coney Island.

“Sorry for not making you my centerfold.”

Oh wow there’s Matt’s deep ass voice.

“We were like the mall before the internet.”

“Sorry for not winning you an arcade ring.”

Wow the lines in this song are *chef’s kiss*

ivy

All I can think is that this is another kid’s name. Gigi’s, maybe? Please be Ivy and not Dorothea.

SHE SAID GODDAMN AGAIN.

This has the same picking style as “willow” and I’m into it.

OPAL EYES <3<3<3

“I can’t stop you putting roots in my dreamland.”

Another wine reference.

So wait this is about someone having ~relations with someone while they’re engaged to someone else? Or married? She must’ve watched a lot of movies about infidelity in quarantine.

Aw yess the drums right at the end.

cowboy like me

Wait who’s the male voice? It doesn’t have anyone credited on Spotify.

This guitar solo is new.

OPE she said fuck again.

long story short

Yes the beat! This must be a Jack song.

Is she saying “I’m all about July” or “I’m all about you, ayyy” lol

SHE SAID EVERMORE even though there’s another song called evermore.

“Long story short, it was a bad time” is such a mood.

marjorie

Okay I know this is named after her grandma so I don’t have to worry about this being anyone’s kid. Except maybe Taylor’s. lol

This is gonna make me cry, isn’t it? I dream about my grandma all the time.

“What died didn’t stay dead” was so hard for me to figure out. It sounds like nonsense.

Who’s this male voice again?

Well I didn’t cry but I’m severely depressed.

closure

Oh, this is fun.

Oh, this changed pace.

This is confusing to my brain.

WHAT ARE THESE SOUNDS?

My brain hurts.

evermore (ft. bon iver)

Please be the sequel to exile.

“Writing letters addressed to the fire?”

I’m kind of bothered by the fact that she’s saying “forever more” but then it’s called “evermore.”

Oh hai, Justin.

I really like this part that’s built up and they’re singing over each other.

It’s a good bookend with Justin singing really high and Taylor singing really high on “willow.”

CONCLUSION:

I’m gonna have to go this time and watch the lyric videos so I can focus on everything else besides deciphering the lyrics. Honestly not sure if it’s as good as folklore but it’s also hard to say. Folklore was so different when it dropped and now I’m just comparing this. I’m sure the more I listen though I’ll love it just as much. Upon first listen, here’s my thoughts:

  • Best lyrics: coney island
  • Best music: long story short
  • Best story: no body, no crime
  • Fave: no body, no crime
  • Least fave: champagne problems
